BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide associated with a gastric protein fragment. Published laboratory and animal studies have examined its relationship to cytoprotective signaling, nitric-oxide pathways, angiogenic signaling, cell migration, and tissue-remodeling processes.

No validated direct receptor has been established. Laboratory research has proposed involvement of VEGFR2-PI3K-Akt-eNOS, Src-caveolin-1-eNOS, ERK1/2, FAK-paxillin, Egr-1/NAB2, and NF-kB-related signaling. These pathways remain subjects of investigation and do not establish a clinical effect.
